Association of Press Clubs (IAPC)
Reciprocal Visiting Privileges For All Members
Dear members,
As we have enrolled quite a few new members this year, this is
to acquaint them with the International Association of
Press Clubs (IAPC), of which the Singapore Press Club
is a Founder-Member and Past President.
The IAPC is a young organisation, having been founded in 2002
to uphold the ethics of journalism and free access and distribution
of information worldwide. The IAPC now has over 20 member Press
Clubs representing Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Australia
and America. The list is continuing to grow. Australia, Berlin,
Cape Town and the Overseas Press Club of America in New York have
been added over the past year through the efforts of our club.
The idea was to create a common network for Press Clubs, Foreign
Correspondents' Clubs and International Press Centers across the
world where they could interact, communicate and get access to
information for their member journalists in an independent and
free manner.
The IAPC is estimated to bring together over 10,000 working journalists
through its member clubs, making it the largest organisation of
its kind in the world.
The IAPC aims to promote friendly contact among journalists worldwide
and offers reciprocal visiting privileges among its member clubs,
including those in Paris, London, Geneva, Munich, Berlin, Milan,
Vienna, Malta, New York, Cape Town, Dubai, New Delhi, Hong Kong,
Canberra and Singapore (Press Club and FCA).
The European Federation of Press Clubs is also a member of the
IAPC and adds about another dozen press clubs to the IAPC network.
The IAPC's general secretariat is hosted by the Dubai Press Club,
which has recently moved to a much bigger place in the new Media
City in Dubai and offers improved working stations and other facilities
to its members.
Many of the overseas Press Clubs run large establishments and
employ full time staff. For instance, the Press Club of France
in a tie-up with Accor, runs a 40 room four star Sofitel hotel
in the heart of Paris, where members enjoy a discount. The Foreign
Correspondent's Club in Hong Kong has six F&B outlets in its
premises and has over 100 staff. Many IAPC members provide working
facilities for their members, which can also be used by other
visiting IAPC members FOC.
Members travelling overseas for professional and personal reasons
are encouraged to visit the IAPC member clubs and avail of reciprocal
visiting privileges. Office-bearers and staff of some of the IAPC
member clubs can also assist in linking up with news-makers and
spokesmen.
The list of IAPC members, addresses and contact details can be
found @ www.iapcworld.org
To help raise the profile of the IAPC and create awareness of
the benefits of its membership, its governing council this year
decided that each member club organise a dedicated IAPC activity
every year.
The Singapore Press Club was the first to do so by organising
the inaugural IAPC annual talk by former CNN anchor Riz Khan in
May at Raffles Hotel, which was well received by members and guests
who attended it.
Our club's newly redesigned membership card shows at the back
that we are a Founder-Member of the IAPC.
You can flash your Singapore Press Club membership card to gain
entry to any of the IAPC member clubs worldwide.
If you have any feedback, or suggestions, please let Club President
Leslie Fong or the Honorary Secretary know.
With best wishes,
Narendra Aggarwal
Honorary Secretary
