New fish farm Barramundi Asia has made a splash since its first harvest last October. Seafood lovers can now get their fresh catch from local supermarkets instead of having to pay top dollar for the airflown delicacy. Touting itself as the only large-scale operation in Singapore specialising in barramundi, the farm aims to eventually account for more than 80 percent of current local fish production. Farms like this are part of an Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) initiative to make Singapore’s food supply more sustainable by increasing homegrown food production to 15 per cent of consumption.

Semakau - Singapore’s only offshore landfill occupies 350 hectares and has a capacity that’s expected to meet local waste disposal needs beyond 2040. It was created by reclaiming land between
Pulau Semakau & Pulau Sakeng at a cost of S$610 million. Operated and maintained by the National Environment Agency (NEA), the Semakau landfill underscores Singapore’s commitment to balancing urban
development with nature conservation. CNN called it the island paradise built on a garbage dump and there are plans to turn Semakau into an eco-park and test bed for renewable and clean energy technologies.
