Central Europe Tour 2009

Nov 6th, 2009 | Category: Recent Events

It was a fabulous and memorable trip. All 30 participants on the Press Club tour of the Slovak and Czech republics from Oct 23 to Nov 1, returned with fond and pleasant memories of the region, despite the biting winter cold. It was the first trip to the post Communist era states for most in the group. Visiting the capital cities of Bratislava and Prague, with their rich cultural traditions and tumultuous political history, was an eye opener for many. Spending eight days in these countries - 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of Communism - the Singapore team was able to get a feel of the struggles and challenges faced by the people of Central Europe.

We were awed by the sight of the splendid medieval buildings and sight seeing was like attending a class on the history of architecture. More importantly, it was a trip that was made extra special by the company of wonderful people, with much contribution from the unfailing wit and mirth of Conrad Raj, who kept the group in high spirits in the cold weather.

Besides taking in the sights and splendour of Slovakia and the Czech republic, the team, led by club president Patrick Daniel, met several government and tourism officials. A small group of journalists had the honour of calling on the President of Slovakia, Mr Ivan Gasparovic at the Presidential Palace in Bratislava.
